Nerja villa, Nerja rentals
The item which inspired this article is a book I noticed in a side street antique shop whilst on holiday in Nerja. We usually stay every year in Nerja for our holidays. Always in a stylish Nerja apartment, a classy Nerja villa or a prominent Nerja rentals. Anyway on with the article.
The artist John William Turner was born in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London in 1775. His father William Turner was a barber and quality wig maker, his mother Mary Marshall became mentally unstable, possibly due to the loss of Turner’s sister Mary Ann Turner at an early age in 1786. Mary Marshall died in 1804, after having been committed in 1799 to St Luke’s Hospital and then to the Bethlem Royal Hospital, a mental asylum in Beckenham alternatively known as Bedlam.
Turner entered the Royal Academy of Art in 1789, when he was only fourteen years old, and was accepted into the academy just one year later. Sir Joshua Reynolds, at that time was the president of the Royal Academy, and he was responsible for admitting Turner into the academy. At first, Turner expressed an interest in architecture but was advised to continue painting by the renowned architect Thomas Hardwick. A watercolour by Turner was accepted for the Summer Exhibition of 1790 after only one year of studying at the academy. He exhibited his first oil painting in 1796; the title of the painting was Fishermen at Sea. This proved a great success, to the point that Turner exhibited his paintings almost every year for the rest of his life.
The most famous painting produced by Turner was without any doubt The Fighting Temeraire, a ship deployed in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The painting depicts the demise of this famous ship being towed to its final berth in East London in 1838, and ultimately broken for scrap. Turner was well into his sixties when the painting was completed and refused to sell the painting at any price. It was bequeathed to the National Gallery in London. He died in the house of his mistress Sophia Caroline Booth in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea on 19 December 1851. At his own request he was buried in St Paul’s Cathedral, next to Sir Joshua Reynolds. His last exhibition at the Royal Academy was in 1850. The architect Philip Hardwick (1792–1870) who was a great friend of Turner’s and the son of the artist’s tutor, Thomas Hardwick, was in overall charge of making his funeral arrangements.
