Wear a helmet you idiot
posted @ 5:00 am in [ Random Thoughts ]

I am really amazed at how many people I’ve seen recently riding motorcycles without a helmet.  You’d think after Ben Roethlisberger’s accident that people would maybe take notice and decide to be a little safer.

I guess not.

Since that happened, I see several people everyday flying down the highway with nothing on their heads.  What the hell is wrong with these people?! You know what it is.  It’s the “It won’t happen to me” syndrome.  Well guess what.  It can happen, and it might happen.  So why not at least be prepared if it does?  Do you think you look cool riding without a helmet?  Well you don’t.  You like a dumbass and you probably are, so you really should wear a helmet to protect what little bit of brains you have.

I can understand not wearing a helmet if you are just taking a casual ride around your neighborhood.  The streets aren’t busy and speed is not much of an issue.  Wearing a helmet still isn’t a bad idea, but the risk is minimal.

Riding on busy roads or on the highway is a completely different story.  You wipe out doing speeds upwards of 70 or 80 mph and you are done my friend.  You’ll have rookie detectives puking up their lunch at the sight of your splattered noggin along the pavement.

Don’t be a dipshit.  Wear a helmet. They make plenty of cool looking styles.  Plus, wearing a helmet at least makes it look like you know what you’re doing and not like some dumbass who jumped on some random bike and took off.

And also, HANG UP AND DRIVE.

  2. Sgt Poon Says:

Ok retard, you think Ben was going 70 or 80? NO! He was going the same speed as a “causual ride around your neighborhood”.
Not wearing a helmet at ANY speed is just plain STUPID.

  3. Eagle Says:

    Preech it man!

  4. Angry Ken Says:

Ok moron, I did say that it was still a good idea to wear a helmet no matter where or how fast you are going. Ben was in downtown Pittsburgh with alot of traffic and intersections. I was referring to a residential area with no traffic lights and little to no traffic. But you are correct. Helmets should always be worn.

  5. Steel City Gal Says:

Having had the extreme misfortune of seeing an accident where the rider wasn’t wearing a helmet and crashed at over 80 mph, I can’t even validate owning or even riding a bike. They scare the hell out of me.

They’re just not worth it! Even if you’re a safe rider, the teenager with the cell phone in one ear and cigarette in another is oblivious. Value your life…drive a tank. LOL

  6. Sgt Poon Says:

    a cigarette in his ear?

  7. Brooks Says:

I will be the first one here to say who cares if they don’t wear helmets! That right if they don’t want to wear a helmet they should not be required to. There should not be a law that says you have to wear a helmet…and here are my reasons.

    1. The world is overpopulated as it is. What better way to lower the population and make the current population smarter all at the same time!

    2. The US economy can’t support everyone. We all know why Social Security will fail and Medicare. It is because there are too many people. So lets let them rid themsevles for us. I plan on living until I am 85 and I want my social security.

    3. Organ donations are down. There is probably some genious out there that needs a kidney. Here is a good way for him to get it. Heck this guy might find a way out of the oil crisis we are in now. I know the dumbass on the bike can’t fix that problem.

    4. Most people who ride bikes without helmets are assholes anyway. They are way too much into themselves. So this will allow the US to be a nicer country.

    5. Motorcycles are loud because those people rev them too high, especially when I am trying to sleep. When I don’t sleep I dont perform as well at work and I cannot continue putting estimates out for power plants that need emission controls on their smoke stacks. The worse I perform, the better chance of us all getting cancer there is.

Well, I think that about covers it.

  8. Sgt Poon Says:

yeah, I don’t think anyone here is arguing for helmet laws… we’re just stating that only an idiot would ride without one, law or not. If you want to go out and ride around without a helmet, I don’t feel the need to try and stop you, but I won’t feel bad when your grape gets squashed by a semi-tire.

  9. Angry Ken Says:

Right. I’m not calling for any helmet laws. But like Brooks said. If you’re dumb enough to ride without one, then society probably doesn’t need you around anyway.

  10. Ratdog Says:

Wearing a helmet, just like wearing a seatbelt, should be the rider’s/driver’s choice. In general, I object to laws telling us what to do. If someone is fool enough to ride without a helmet, they need to know that their head could (and does) explode like a watermelon if it hits something hard — like a road, tree or guardrail. But I would never, ever tell a rider that he or she has to wear one. We are not sheep.

  11. Sgt Poon Says:

sheep are required to wear helmets?

  12. Steel City Gal Says:

Ha…I just got my typo Sgt. I guess even geniuses make mistakes once in their life.

  13. Keith Says:

I think everyone should ride without a helment. Just sign the organ doner form. I might need a transplant someday and this gives a lot of choices for a match.

  14. heather Says:

Anyone consider that at 70 to 80 mph a helmet does you absolutly no good? hmmmmm, think about it.

  15. Laura Says:

Just want to mention that because of all the idiots who choose not to wear a seatbelt (even though its the LAW) make it so the government requires all airbags to be powerful enough to protect non seatbelt wearers. This means smaller people and children who DO wear seatbelts get hurt by the extra force. Thanks a LOT!

  16. Loki Says:

At least people who ride without helmets are doing their part to keep the stupid population in check.

  17. Judi Says:

A few years ago in Boston some kid was killed on a motorcycle. He was wearing half a basketball to fool the cops into thinking it was a helmet. Worked great as a cop-deterrent. As a safety device . . . not so much.

  18. fROGGY57 Says:

If you wipe out at 70 on a motorcycle, having or not having a helmet on is not going to make bit of difference. There won’t be enough of you to scrape up anyway.
Besides, Angry Ken.. what the hell do you care anyway.
You remind me of a nosy old bag who lived on our street, sitting by her window and writing down license numbers of speeding cars and calling them in to police.
Shut up about helmets, you idiot.
The only thing dumber than the guy riding w/o one is the idiot complaining about it.
Get back under the porch, I’ll tell you when to come out.
    Signed,
    The Angry Reader.

  19. Senor big Dank Says:

Senor big Dank says dont do drugs while driving a motorcycle… its ok if your driving a car.. cause then you can roll over motorcycles

  20. Karl Says:

Personally, I think that Ben Toothlessberger would be contractually required to wear a helmet at all times, even when just walking around, driving his car, or shopping for baguettes. His contract is way too much to lose on some stupid, clucking jock frat-boy prank like trying to chew the hood ornament off of a Buick. Wearing Steelers colors 24/7 would sure promote the team, as well.
Not a steelers fan, by the way.

  21. Ken Says:

Not a Steelers fan, you’re in the right place.

And if given the choice, I’d rather have a helmet on when wiping out at 80 mph than not have one on.

  22. MadDog Says:

I just love people talking about what they know not!
    - Almost as much as I like lawmakers making about what they know not.
Yes a helmet offers some protection.
Sometimes they are more of a hazzard than they’re worth.
Ride a bike & find out.
    About airbags:
And don’t you just feel all warm & fuzzy
driving around with a blasting cap stareing you in the face.

  23. IncrediBILL Says:

People that don’t want to wear helmets or seatbelts are perfectly fine as it’s evolution in action and weeds them out of the gene pool when they splatter.

Don’t encourage them to change, it won’t make them any smarter, just let nature take it’s course.

  24. Jon Says:

First off: MadDog, you are wrong. I respect your opinion, but you can’t just pass it off as fact. Helmets save lives, that’s a fact. They can also prevent you from being disfigured if you happen to be in a less hazardous low speed crash. Second: if your helmet is a hazard, you bought the wrong one. A smart motorcyclist may try on dozens before buying one. And, don’t just buy a cheap helmet because the law says you have to wear one. Let’s remember that our brains live in our head, and do everything we can to protect them.
There are vast differences between a $90 motorcycle helmet and a $500 motorcycle helmet, and someone buying a new helmet should take the time to find out what they are. Visit manufacturers web sites, compare specifications and certifications, and find out exactly how a helmet should fit.
Last: if riding around without a helmet makes you happy, and you feel safe doing it, then go right ahead. Darwin was probably right anyway.
    Safe riding to all.
    -Jon

  25. supermoth Says:

Regarding organ donation: If a motorcyclist dies in a high speed crash, do you think his or her organs are going to be of much use? I mean, if you’re splattered all over the pavement, chances are your organs aren’t going to be in any fine shape.

My personal pet peeve is the people who ride not only without helmets, but without leather or any other form of protection on their legs and arms.

Finally, a close family friend of mine was in a motorcycle accident several years ago. The two riders on the bike were both wearing helmets and protective gear. He lost his leg. She lost her arm. She was also a champion racketball player. They were lucky.

  26. bohab Says:

I rode a motorcycle for a good part of my youth and found that helmets can be dangerous and cause accidents too.

They limit peripheral vision, can get fogged up, rain and bug spattered and can shift at the wrong moment.

Maybe helmets are a bit better these days but just last year I had the same problem with a brand new helmet.

I don’t ride anymore but if I did I think I would do it carefully and defensively and forego the head anchor.

  27. alexandra mcgee Says:

heck yes you should wear a helmet!! id learn from that Ben Roethlisberger guy rather than passing it by of freaking ignoring it like a DA!!
