Shaun Alexander proved that he is not the NFL’s MVP on Saturday by his absence.
Name the other four main MVP candidates… Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, and Tiki Barber. All going home WITH their MVP candidate (except Palmer, but don’t get me started). But the Seahawks, without their MVP, still managed to win a playoff game…
Tell me, if he is SOO important to his team that he gets the MVP, then why are they able to win in January WITHOUT HIM?!?!?!
Personally, I vote for either Brady or Palmer… The Bengals showed what kind of team they are without Palmer, 11 wins with him, asses whipped without him.
And as much as I hate the Patriots, I’m beginning to believe that Brady isn’t quite as overrated as I once thought, but I still think the media needs to get off his jock.
So, there you have it. Alexander, while having an outstanding year (one of the best ever by an RB) shouldn’t have been given the MVP. They don’t need him to win, and the NFL is FULL of really, really good runners…

I would have voted for Palmer, and not just because I am a Bengals fan. Without Palmer they probably wouldn’t have even gone 8-8.

I agree that a MVP should be essential to the team but Alexander set a new NFL record for touchdowns and got the rushing title. I would probably have voted for him but i am biased he was on my fantasy team and I dislike the three QB’s that were up for it and he was better than Tiki. even though the Seahawks won without him they barely rushed for 100 yards when they usually go over 150. also you could have a “win one for the gipper” kind of moment when your star goes down where your team rally’s for him. this is usually most evident when a QB goes down and the backup comes in and lights up the defense. it just didn’t happen for you or us(earlier in the season) because your backup is Kitna and ours is Maddox.

But Alexander showed that he wasn’t “essential” to the team! So their running game dropped by a third, they still managed to score and put up yards. And I’m sorry, that “win one for the gipper” moment doesn’t last the ENTIRE game in the PLAYOFFS. The Bengals proved that when they held their own in the first half with Kitna but then fell apart after reality set in.

yeah but kitna sucks and that may also be atributed to not having a game plan drawn up for Kitna

I wouldn’t say that Kitna sucks. Sure he’s no pro bowler, but he is a very solid backup. There are going to be several teams that are going to try and sign him on as a starter for next year if he doesn’t re-sign with Cincinnati.

Kitna is no longer starting material. Any team that takes him on as a starting is signing disaster. Him and Tommy Maddox are one in the same. It’s so hard to tell a football-passionate QB that he is too old and is gaining unshakable rust.
I suppose it’s just hard for these guys to go out on the bottom. Anyone can understand, right?
As for Alexander, 28 touchdowns for the season is phenomenal…even for such a soft schedule.

Yes, 28 touchdowns IS phenominal, but the award is for the most VALUABLE player, not the most phenominal. If it were, Steve Smith would have gotten many many votes this year. I submit that there are about half a dozen running backs in the NFL who could’ve put up similar numbers with that offensive unit. His yards per carry were a great 5.1, but there are others with higher numbers. There are others still who don’t have the offense around them that are putting up close to that.

if that is the case then it can only ever go to a QB on a team that is completely one dimensional because every other position is at least somewhat replaceable and if you have a good or balanced team a decent backup can somewhat pick up the slack and not kill you. wether it is right or wrong the award should always go to the PLAYER with the best stats for the season. the only real problem i have with the way the award is handed out is the despite numbers it always goes only to a member of a winning team. what if Kurt warner threw 45 tds and for 5500 yards but his team only won five games he probably would come in third or fourth in the voting because the cards are horrible

I don’t know about the regular season MVP, but I’ll tell you who the playoff MVP is! Kimo Von Oelhoffen. Without him the Steelers don’t make it out of the first round, let alone the f*cking Superbowl.
