The gas prices keep rising and I think it’s bullcrap. I have to fill up on my way home from work today and I’ve already spent enough money this past week. What happened to the days when gas was right around $1.30 a gallon? Ah crap this sucks.
Is there any end in sight? Probably not. The way I see it, we all deal with the high cost of gas and eventually become used to it. After a while, We’ll be thrilled to have have gas prices at $3 a gallon when the price shoots up between $3.50 and $4.00 or higher. It’s all part of the damn oil companies’ plan.
The days of $2.00 gas are gone. Get ready to shell out half your paycheck on a damn tank of gas.

I figured it out the other day and between my husband and I, we spend an average of $600 a month on filling up our tanks. That’s right, $600 damn dollars. That’s some people’s rent!
Every time a friggin Republican comes into office, oil prices surge. If you don’t believe me, look at historical pricing. Facts don’t lie.

Oh for christ sake. Here we go blaming the prez for everything.

Is that the best response you have? Google it, educate yourself a bit. You’ll see…

Look at this link I found from a PBS website (HIPPIE ALERT, HIPPIE ALERT!):
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/economy/gas_hike_4-30.html
It discuss a Gasoline price surge in 1996, when Clinton (not Republican) was in office.
The fact is oil prices will continue to go up until an viable alternative fuel is used by the majority of the country for transportation.

That “price surge” of 1996 was a blip on the radar, it did not last long at all. But good try C4.
I do agree with you that as long as we depend on oil as our main fuel source, prices will go up. But while Americans are paying record-breaking amounts, oil companies are having record-breaking profits. I find it all too convenient that rich bastard Republicans like Bush have a financial interest in big oil.
And I am not a hippie, I am OPEN-MINDED!

For those just tuning into this conversation, let me catch you up:
Steel City Gal: (erroneous, politically biased claims unsupported by any facts or proofs)
C4: (counter-arguement, supported by facts)
Steel City Gal: (dismissal of facts that don’t support her claims with more unsupported opinions disguised as truth)
I think that about sums it up.

Wow, you’ll never believe this one…Republicans voted against taking away big oil’s tax breaks.
C4: I would hardly call that article you posted “factual”. Dig deeper in that google search. Go on…

SCG: Thank you for providing a link this time.
Did you really think the Republicans would vote for higher taxes? Perhaps you don’t like Republicans because you don’t know what they are about.
Quote: “They (Republican) trust markets to optimize outcomes, rather than government mandates. This mindset is seen most often in the party’s push for lower tax rates”
From:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republican_Party_%28United_States%29#Current_structure_and_composition
If you don’t understand why lower taxes are a good thing, I suggest you take an Economics 101 class, and pay close attention to the effect of positive/negative externalities. You’ll be amazed.

C4 - You want me to be persuaded by providing me a link for the Republican party?!? Yeah, sure, that will be an unbiased view of the current administration and it’s mishandlings. I am not a Democrat and I do not dislike all Republicans. I just completely disagree with most everything the current administration stands for.
I refuse to try and talk logic to a right-winger such as yourself. Keep talking big and puffing those feathers of yours. No more of my breath will be wasted on this arguement.
May 1st, 2006 at 4:57 pm
I am guessing you are unfamiliar with Wikipedia.org; by it’s very nature, it is unbiased.
May 1st, 2006 at 7:06 pm
While I try to avoid political talk most times, I have to say this. C4 is right in saying that Wikipedia is completely unbiased. They have in depth articles on both parties…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republican_Party_%28United_States%29
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Party_%28United_States%29
So, Steel City Gal, you might want to check before you accuse someone of using a biased source, no matter how biased the accusee…

The high gas prices are no ones fault but our own.
1. The number one resason oil prices are rising is because oil is going to run out! It is something we have known about since Henery Ford first designed a car that could run on soybean oil.
2. Because oil is limited and will run, oil companies have not and will not build new refineries. A single refinery costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 billion dollars. The oil companies will not get a return on their investment because the oil will run out before they get a chance to. The oil companies are making record profits because they are using refineries that have finally been paid off. The problem right now is not the price of oil, rather the lack of refining capacity.
3. In addition to all of this, a ruling was handed down about 1 month ago that said the oil companies are not insulated from lawsuits from people who get cancer from MTBE. MTBE is a gasoline additive which reduces the amount of pollutants in the atmosphere. The alternative to MTBE is adding Ethanol to our gasoline. Ethanol is produced from corn, switchgrass, sugar cane, etc. The demand for Ethanol has increased dramatically since this ruling because the “Ozone” season, where MTBE was supposed to be used, starts May 1. There is not enough Ethanol refining capacity right now to supply demand. Ethanol is also a very corosive substance and cannot be piped to the refineries across the country, it must be trucked and trucking that much product is expensive. It will continue to be trucked until we upgrade our pipe lines to handle Ethanol.
4. The other reasons are political - Iran, Iraq, Nigerian and the situations in those countries.
Many of you now are wondering what do we do? We here is the answer. We cannot drill our way out of this problem, we must change our ways. Brazil is completely Oil independent because after the 1970’s oil crisis they decieded to use fuel they can make themselves, Ethanol. They drive GM cars and trucks and make their own fuel, which is now costing them $1.50 per gallon. I hope gasoline stays above $3 per gallon, this way we will demand lower prices and demand the switch to Ethanol. We must demand E85 and biodiesel and until we do get ready for high gas prices. Switching to Ethanol in your car/truck is simple, change out the chip that tells the car how much fuel to mix and buy a new gas tank that can handle the more corosive fuel.
Regardless of our decision, gas prices will come down next year when the farmers have time to grow enough corn to make enough Ethanol to go around.
