Camden Tourist Attractions

Camden is a classic coastal town in Maine that has been attracting droves and droves of tourists for years. An affluent community, it is populated by over five thousand people yet, surprisingly, Camden exudes a small town, old era atmosphere. The town is full of tourist attractions, Camden Maine hotels and other kinds of accommodations, plus an endless array for recreational activities to do.

The Camden Hills State Park is probably the number one tourist destination in town. It has 5,500 acres of preserved land, with great picnic grounds, a well-equipped camping ground, and thirty miles of nature trails with famous views atop Mount Battie and Mount Megunticook. The 800-foot high Maidens Cliff is also part of the State Park and is easily recognizable by the steel white cross that stands on top of it.

The beautiful gardens and 10-acre arboretum are just two of the attractions tourists can find in the Merry Spring Nature Center along Conway Road, a 66-acre combination park and educational center established in 1974 by noted horticulturalist Merry Ellen Ross. It houses several themed gardens, four miles of nature trails, greenhouses, and open areas perfect for picnics. The Nature Center is also a popular wedding venue for their natural landscapes and gardens that make it attractive backdrops for celebrations.

Tourists can use Camden as their base and travel a little beyond into the town of Rockland where they can find the Farnsworth Art Museum which houses over 10,000 works of art from 18th to 20th century American artists. It is also in Rockland where one can find the largest lighthouse museum in the United States, the Maine Lighthouse Museum. It contains the largest collection of US Coast Guard memorabilia, maritime artifacts, and Fresnel lighthouse lenses.

Sailing opportunities are abundant in Camden. There are numerous boats for rent, offering hours of scenic cruises and island hopping activities. The windjammer business is an old one, started by Captain Frank Swift in the 1940s. A visit to Camden is incomplete without a ride on one of these historic ships, with their trademark large masts and sails. Kayaking outfitters can also be found in Camden, most offer guided tours and complete gear to make the experience as pleasant as it can be for their customers.

Camden Maine lodging and many other tourist lodgings are attractions in themselves, providing tourists with comfortable and cozy places to stay in during their vacations. Most of them are conveniently situated near or within walking distances of shops, restaurants, and establishments offering recreational activities but for those looking for more secluded areas of retreat, inns and houses for rent are also available.
