Maine Festivals and Art Scene

Maine hosts a wide range of festivals, museums, and galleries. From music and film to seafood, there are plenty of activities for a variety of tastes. Maine lodging fills up quickly when it gets close to the dates of the established festivals, so it is best to book well in advance.

The Atlantic Music Festival in Waterville brings classical music lovers and internationally renowned artists together from mid July to mid August. Residents and tourists alike enjoy this six week long event that also features the local orchestra performing unforgettable music. The Kahbang Festival is a more recent addition to the Maine events and is a celebration of music and the arts.

There are two film festivals that are well attended by visitors from near and far. One is the Bangor Film Festival and the other is the Maine International Film Festival. Another big draw for the crowds is the Yarmouth Clam Festival in Yarmouth, Maine, attended by some 120,000 people in order to have fun and raise money for local charities at the same time. This event takes place annually the third weekend in July and lasts for four days.

Art is an important medium of expression in Maine and visitors can see historical, folk, and modern art exhibits at several galleries throughout the state of Maine. Art of historical significance can be viewed at the Maine State Building. Other galleries include Sanctuary Arts, L.D.M. Sweat Memorial Gallery, and a number of nationally recognized art museums at several local colleges. For those who prefer sculpture, there is a mysterious outdoor statue entitled, “The Boy With The Leaking Boot,” which has conflicting tales of its origin and symbolism.

Preserving history, cultural understanding, and education are important to the people of Maine, evidenced by their many museums. These community museums include the Museum of African Culture, Portland Museum of Art, Ogunquit Museum of American Art, Rufus Porter Museum, and Farnsworth Art Museum.

Maine life is enhanced and enriched by its rich cultural and historical heritage and offers various festivals throughout the year. There are plently Maine lodging options available and the choices are designed for any budget and all maintain high standards. Rich autumn colors combined with friendly people and pristine beaches makes it a pleasant place to vacation.
